Firstly evaluate what Mr X
Firstly evaluate what Mr X has actually come for. What is he seeking therapy for?
Then look at his history. where does his low self esteem come from? Does he have a negative belief system? why? His mother seems very dominating (what about his father?).
What can he actually do to resolve his current problems and then why doesn't he do it?
What information are we missing? We dont really know much about his relationship with his girlfriend. Would this make a difference to anything?
Are there any reasons not to treat him?
Just a few little pointers for you :) have fun. I had trouble keeping this essay below 3000 words.
Cheers

The full question
I just thought I'd include the full question, in case some people don't have it with them.
'Mr X is a 45 year old estate agent who has been working in the same company for 18 years. T he mangers job in his branch has become available but he has reservations about applying as he does not want to upset the apple cart if he is not successful. He knows deep down that he can do the job as he has stood in for the present manager many times when he has been on leave, but something seems to be holding him back and he cannot quite put his finger on it. He says that all the people in his office see him as a bit boring as he never goes out with them for a drink after work on a Friday. The reason he doesn't go is because that is the day he visits his mother in the home she lives in, and she would never understand if he changed the day and would pick on him more than usual. He would love's the managers job because then his mother would see him as more successful and maybe give him more respect. He has a sort of girlfriend whom he would like to marry but feels that he does not have much to offer her at present and anyway she might say 'No'. He comes across as a gentle man who is very aware of the feelings of others and afraid of what they might think of him. You will have assessed him as visual in modality.'
Mr X case study
hi,
i am currently trying to do this essay question and am floundering a bit. I am guessing it is focussing on self esteem issues but to try and expand this into a 2000 word essay seems a tall order. What am i missing, i think assessing for depression will be part of it. But do we need to go into the initial consultation in detail?
Any tips or guidance would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Annieboo

mr x
I found this one hard too
The main point i didnt work out is Mr X needs help growing up.
He needs to take responsibility.
Hi Annie, I'm not sure what
Hi Annie,
I'm not sure what the criteria are, so the first thing would be to check with your tutor. I presume the question asks for your course of treatment. So, it would be worth finding out things like, If you include portions of Screeds you would use, are they included in the Word Count?
I cannot tell you exactly what your tutor is looking for, but as you asked for any tips or guidance, it might be worth considering:
1) Read the exact Question again, carefully.
Note that it is asking for three things: i) Identify the issues, ii) Explain the issues, iii) Devise a course of treatment for him.
2) Would it be appropriate for you - as a hypnotherapist - to assess for depression. If not, then it might be worth mentioning that in your essay. What would you do instead?
3) Self-esteeem is a massive issue. Some therapists consider it the root of all problems that people come to therapy for.
There is simple situation-based lack of confidence and then there is deep-rooted underlying lack of Self-Esteem. Which (if any) is at work here? Is it both? How are you deciding that? (Remember to always consider the ethical limits of what you can and cannot diagnose.) How would you treat the two differently?
Don't forget to consider hidden agendas and secondary gains.
4) Devise and describe a course of treatment, maybe divided into weeks
Explain what you would do and why and what possible outcomes you might face.
As I said, I'm no expert, so please take this as simple suggestions, based on how I might approach it. It's worth talking your ideas over with your tutor and study group if you are overly concerned.
Feel free to share your thoughts/progress so far.
